A first report on a bloom of the marine prymnesiophycean, Phaeocystis globosa from the Arabian Sea ArchiMer
Madhupratap, M; Sawant, S; Gauns, M.
A thick bloom of the marine prymnesiophycean, Phaeocystis globosa was observed in the central Arabian Sea during the summer monsoon period (July-August, 1996). The cells were mostly in colonial form, embedded in gelatinous matrices. The cell diameter was approximately 7 mu m and showed a distinct double feature form. The intensity of the bloom was as high as 3750 x 10(6) cells m(-2) and the carbon content ranged between 33 and 550 mu g L(-1). Almost 90% of the phytoplankton population was composed of P. globosa in the bloom area. Other common forms were chain-forming diatoms like Rhizosolenia spp., Nitzschia spp. and Chaetoreros spp. The photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll a, however did not show any concomitant rise with the bloom intensity probably...

Changes in the phytoplankton of Lake Planetario after a restoration process Darwiniana
Ehrenhaus,Constanza; Vigna,María Susana.
Lake Planetario is an urban recreational lake that suffered a Microcystis aeruginosa bloom in March 1999. At the same time the birds and fishes that inhabited the lake died, probably affected by microcystin, hepatotoxin that some strains of Miycrocyistis produce. The City of Buenos Aires requested Aguas Argentinas to restore the lake. Restoration tasks included treatment of sediments and pumping of water from a brackish aquifer. For one year, monthly samples were taken with a phytoplankton net, the qualitative and quantitative composition of the phytoplankton were studied, and physicochemical data were collected. The structure and composition of the phytoplankton were studied and revealed that due to the turbulence caused by the pumping of water, the...

Cyanobacteria, microcystins and cylindrospermopsin in public drinking supply reservoirs of Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
BITTENCOURT-OLIVEIRA,MARIA DO CARMO; PICCIN-SANTOS,VIVIANE; MOURA,ARIADNE N.; ARAGÃO-TAVARES,NÍSIA K.C.; CORDEIRO-ARAÚJO,MICHELINE K..
Brazil has a history of blooms and contamination of freshwater systems by cyanobacterial toxins. The monitoring relevance of toxins from cyanobacteria in reservoirs for public supply is notorious given its high toxicity to mammals, included humans beings. The most recurrent toxins in Brazilian water bodies are microcystins (MC). However, the recent record of cylindrospermopsin (CYN) in northeastern Brazil, Pernambuco state, alerts us to the possibility that this could be escalating. This study reports occurrence of MC and CYN, quantified with ELISA, in 10 reservoirs, devoted to public drinking supply in northeastern Brazil. The composition and quantification of the cyanobacteria community associated with these water bodies is also presented. From 23...

Le bloom de Phaeocystis en Manche orientale. Nuisances socio-économiques et / ou écologiques ? ArchiMer
Lefebvre, Alain; Delpech, Jean-paul.

This paper is the first report on microcystins producer blooms of Microcystis aeruginosa in the Argentinean coast of the Río de la Plata river, the most important drinking water supply of Argentina. The distribution of toxic cyanobacterium Microcystis cf. aeruginosa blooms in the Argentinean coast of the Rio de la Plata river was studied from December 2003 and January 2006. Microcystis aeruginosa persisted in the river with values ranged between 0 - 7.8 10(4) cells ml-1. Samples of two Microcystis aeruginosa water blooms were collected at La Plata river and were analyzed by the mouse bioassay and by high-performance liquid chromatography with Diode-array and MS detector. The samples showed high hepatotoxicity in mouse bioassay and, in accordance, important...

Offshore distribution patterns of the cyanobacterium Trichodesmium erythraeum ehrenberg and associated phyto- and bacterioplankton in the southern Atlantic coast (Paraná, Brazil) BABT
Siqueira,Adriana; Kolm,Hedda Elisabeth; Brandini,Frederico Pereira.
Studies were carried out on Thrichodesmium erythraeum occurring on the inner shelf in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Temperature, salinity, rainfall, wind velocity, total bacteria, bacterial biomass, chlorophyll-a, phytoplankton, Anabaena sp., Merismopedia sp. and T. erythraeum densities were measured in surface water. Centric and pennate diatoms, Anabaena sp. and Merismopedia sp. were most abundant at 15 m isobath, while dinoflagellate abundance was relatively constant among stations. Similarly, total bacterial densities were relatively homogeneous throughout the sampling area, suggesting that blooms of T. erythraeum were not yet in the senescent phase. Results showed that T. erythraeum was capable of surviving in relatively inhospitable environmental...

Screening the toxicity and toxin content of blooms of the cyanobacterium Trichodesmium erythraeum (Ehrenberg) in northeast Brasil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Proença,LAO; Tamanaha,MS; Fonseca,RS.
Blooms of the cyanobacterium Trichodesmium occur in massive colored patches over large areas of tropical and subtropical oceans. Recently, the interest in such events has increased given their role in major nitrogen and carbon dioxide oceanic fluxes. Trichodesmium occurs all along the Brazilian coast and patches frequently migrate towards the coast. In this paper we screen the toxicity and toxin content of Trichodesmium blooms off the coast of Bahia state. Four samples, collected from February to April 2007, were analyzed. Organisms were identified and assessed for toxicity by means of several methods. Analogues of microcystins, cylindrospermopsins and saxitoxins were analyzed using HPLC. Microcystins were also assayed through ELISA. Results showed...

The influence of hydrodynamics on the spatial and temporal variation of phytoplankton pigments in a large, sub-tropical coastal lake (Brazil) BABT
Cardoso,Luciana de Souza; Marques,David da Motta.
This study evaluated the spatial and temporal distribution of phytoplankton pigments in Itapeva Lake and its relationship with hydrodynamic aspects. Regarding spatial distribution, a decreasing N®S gradient was generally observed for the pigments, except in summer. This inversion observed during the summer was influenced by the predominant fetch (N-E). The horizontal heterogeneity was proved (ANOVA) for all seasons of the year, except spring. Spatially in spring, the vertical variance was much more significant (p<0.05) than the horizontal one. The sampling shifts presented a permanent degree of variability among the seasons of the year, showing the existence of a diurnal cycle in the concentration of chlorophyll a. This behavior was related to the...

The repetitive and expanding occurrence of a green, bloom-forming dinoflagellate (Dinophyceae) on the coasts of France ArchiMer
Sournia, Alain; Belin, Catherine; Billard, Chantal; Catherine, Martial; Erard-le Denn, Evelyne; Fresnel, Jacqueline; Lassus, Patrick; Pastoureaud, Annie; Soulard, René.
A dinoflagellate has produced green-water events along the Atlantic and English Channel coasts of France since 1982. It differs morphologically from each of the 12 taxa or so of green gymnodinoid dinoflagellates previously known. As some morphological details, as well as their variability, remain to be ascertained, this organism is illustrated and described here under the provisional designation of Gymnodinium "sp. 1982". The presence of chlorophyll b has been confirmed by HPLC analysis but it could not be ascertained whether true chloroplasts are present, or symbionts. The distribution is coastal and estuarine. The number and intensity of the outbreaks may be related to river runoff and to the amount of preceding rainfall. An encysted stage is described....

'Valencia' sweet orange tree flowering evaluation under field conditions Scientia Agricola
Ribeiro,Rafael Vasconcelos; Rolim,Glauco de Souza; Azevedo,Fernando Alves de; Machado,Eduardo Caruso.
Since citrus flowering is a key process in citriculture and its evaluation is often difficult due to the canopy structure and field sampling, the aim of this research was to give some directions regarding the evaluation of flowering in field-grown sweet orange plants. This study was conducted in a citrus orchard of sweet orange plants cv. 'Valencia' [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck] grafted on 'Cleopatra' mandarin (Citrus reshni hort. ex Tanaka) or 'Rangpur' lime (Citrus limonia Osbeck) rootstocks, with North-South orientation. Generative structures [buds, flowers and fruitlets (diameter < 3 cm)] were quantified weekly between August and November 2005, by using a 1 m² frame positioned at the middle third of plant canopy, sampling a volume of about 1 m³....
